Electronic Vs. Acoustic

The drum kit although definatley loud at home (especially for the neighbours) it has a lot of versatility for gigging; being that there are not any jack leads to plug in, also you have to make sure that you use a compatible amplifier. The drum kit is quicker to set up and and can produce a range of sounds for each individual drum (sensors not needed). The acoustic drum kit looks impressive (although you could argue that the new Roland TD 50 looks equally as good) and come in lots of different finishes.

Electronic Kit

The great advantage of having an electronic drum kit is that the kit does not take up as much room as a acoustic kit and the volume can be controlled either with headphones or through an external speaker, which is a major plus when you have neighbours close by. Also, really good for onl;ine lessons using 'Zoom'.

With an electronic drum kit, you have more drum kit sounds to mess about with. The amount and quality of sampled sounds which have been programmed into the 'brain' are reflected in the cost of the kit. Also, the more the expensive the individual electronic pad is, generally there will be more sensors connected to the pad (more sensitive) whereas a cheaper pad will be more basic and only have one sensor - which will limit the response of the pad.

When you look at the higher end of the market with the electronic kits, the drum pad head tends to be made of mesh. The mesh heads have become a lot more popular due to the stick rebound feeling closer to the real feel of drum head. They also have a lot of extra gizmo's: metronome, different drum kit combinations, the ability to link to a computer and backing tracks to play along with. As with most products, the cost of the electronic kit is proportional to the quality. (I recommend this kit to my pupils, as it is a great electronic kit to start your journey as a drummer)

So which kit is better!
For the gigging drummer, the acoustic drum kit is definitely the best.

Whereas the electronic kit is fantastic for home practice.
